Abstract:

In the time of the Secular and Post-secular societies around the world, Old Testament Exegesis suffers as equal to authentic biblical scholarship. Secularity and post-secularity bring and promote freedom that is different from one given to humans by God, and breeds separation and egoism which leads to solitude. On the other hand, Old Testament Exegesis is everything but the act of egoism, for the act itself calls for a two-fold relationship: relationship with God and relationship with people. In the paper, I explore the phenomena of Old Testament Exegesis in the Secular and Post-secular societies, and how these societies shape the exegesis. Based on my analysis, I argue that the trustworthy Old Testament Exegesis in the Secular and Post-secular societies has to rely on the relationship with God, text, and people. It has to be engaging and inviting, yielding the fruit of understanding and at the same time, not forgetting the societies as a part of Creation.
